Submarine surfaces in Moscow

Published: 04 March, 2007, 00:07

Residents and visitors near the Great Stone Bridge in the Russian capital can witness a most unusual sight – a submarine conning tower rising from the waters of the Moskva-river. The vessel is part of the Second Modern Art show.

The ship is not far from the embankment, but you can only get there by using a boat because this ceremony is also part of the show. The submarine, which cruises by the name of “The Secret Fairway,” is a true piece of modern art. It has a unique military design, coloured lights and installed speakers, which play songs, known and loved by Russians.

One of its creators, Aleksandr Ponomarev, says this is what the Russian navy should look like in the future.

“It's the youth that want to serve in the Navy. They'll become admirals defending our sea borders. The youth feel more freedom now. They are more open-minded,” believes the artist.

People call Mr Ponomarev a “sailing artist”, as he used to be a sailor in the past. Ten years ago he painted his first ship, which he found at a ship graveyard in the Barents Sea.

In the last 9 years, the “The Secret Fairway” has navigated the Arctic Ocean, has seen Paris and the Loire in France. And now it has arrived in Moscow all on its own – according to the artist. The submarine will be hiding in the Moskva-river for another month. But Mr Ponomarev says the secret of how the ship got into the river in the first place will not be revealed.
