Submarine tragedy remembered across the world

A performance based on the disastrous events of the Russian nuclear submarine Kursk that sank into the deep waters of the Barents Sea with all of the 118 crew members on board, has been staged in Australia.

An Aussie playwright, Sasha Yanovich, told Russia’s Itar-Tass news agency it took him seven years to study each and every bit of the material in connection with the 2000 tragedy believed to have been caused by a torpedo explosion in the front section of the sub during exercises.

“I’d like to express my enormous gratitude to all those who supported me, namely Russian submarine-officers, as well as women who’ve lost their husbands in the tragedy,” Yanovich was quoted as saying.

In addition, the music for the performance was composed by one of Russia’s most unconventional musicians, Boris Grebenshchikov.

Local theater critics have already described the Australian performance as one of the best productions of the new season.

Earlier this summer a separate performance inspired by the Kursk disaster was staged in London’s Young Vic Theatre.
