An opera diva from Sweden has led her country to the Eurovision Song Contest final having defeated participants from Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Belgium, Belarus, Macedonia and Montenegro.
In her Eurovision entry “La Voix”, Malena combines classical music with pop, singing the song in both English and French.
The Swedish mezzo-soprano Malena Ernman has a classical academic musical education. Malena believes it is very important to spread academic music among the youth. Despite being a professional opera singer, she also sings chanson, cabaret, and jazz.
“I’m from the classical side of music. I have never been through anything like this before, so I can’t compare. Talking to other people [I heard them saying] that this is the biggest ever [Eurovision they’ve seen], the organization is fantastic, and people are so nice … My first opinion is ‘wow!’” said diva Malena Ernman
Malena Ernman believes that events as Eurovision help people “to get to know each other better” and “show respect to every country.”
Now that the Swede has overcome the first step, the real battle is on May 16, when Malena will take on her new rivals in the final of Eurovision 2009.
