16 teams battle it out in UEFA Cup

The remaining 16 teams in the UEFA Cup were all in action in first leg matches on Thursday. The day featured a few interesting games, including Sevilla’s home draw against Shakhtar Donetsk and Werder Bremen’s away win.
It was a good night for French side Lens. They defeated Bayer Levekausen 2-1. Elsewhere, CSKA Moscow's victors, Maccabi Haifa, drew with Espanyol. Werder Bremen were narrow winners 1-0 over Celta Vigo. The holders, Sevilla, have left themselves a tough task. They could only manage a 2-2 draw at home to Shakhtar Donetsk. Meanwhile there were good wins for the two remaining English sides, Newcastle and Tottenham.
