Record numbers of smitten couples have crammed into registry offices in Russia and all over the world to tie the knot on the lucky 'triple eight'. The auspicious allure of 08/08/08 has sparked a wedding boom in Moscow where 1,675 couples exchanged vows on
The appeal of the figure eight is that, as well as being a lucky number in many cultures, it is written with a single fluid stroke of the pen and symbolises eternity – which many translate as a happy, prosperous marriage. The figure is also seen as representing two interlocking wedding rings.
In some Russian cities, demand for weddings caused long queues at registry offices. Some ceremonies were even conducted outdoors.
“It's a privilege to marry on such a date. I've no words to express my excitement!” said one thrilled Moscow groom.
