Three tunnels planned to run under a road in the nature resort of Belovezhskaya Pushcha in Belarus will save thousands of frog lives.

The tunnels are to be built during the reconstruction of an automobile road going to the primeval forest from the city of Brest, report local media.

Three tubes laid 50 meters apart from each other will let migrating frogs and toads to cross the road safely. At the moment many amphibians die crushed under the wheels of passing cars.

“The underground crossing will reduce the death toll by at least 50%,” said the resort’s Deputy Head for Research Vasily Arnoldik.

It is the second project of its kind in the country. The first frog crossing was built in the Brezinsk resort in 2006.
