Zenit players celebrate
Zenit St Petersburg have produced one of their finest ever performances in Europe. The Russian champions destroyed Bayer Leverkusen 4-1 in Germany to take an emphatic advantage back to Russia for the second leg of the UEFA Cup quarter-final tie.
It wasn't supposed to finish like this. Bayer had been in sparkling form in the tournament knocking out early favourites Galatasaray and Hamburg on their way to the last eight.
But Zenit are never a team to study the form book too closely. Man of the match, Andrey Arshavin, got the ball rolling for the Russian champions, with Pavel Pogrebnyak, Aleksandr Anyukov and Igor Denisov all getting their name on the score sheet in the easy win.
