Published: 05 September, 2008, 07:52

When shops in a popular Italian coastal resort were hit with a wave of thefts, owners called in police to track down the culprit. They moved in on a couple of men bundling clothes into a bag and found one was none other than Vladimir Putin.

The Russian Prime Minister's namesake is accused of stealing about a thousand euros' worth of merchandise from clothes and accessory stores.

Vladimir Putin, 30, a Russian citizen with no fixed residence, and his accomplice were charged with aggravated theft.

If he were to be deported to Russia for his crime, Vladimir Putin could create some real diplomatic headaches.
