World record birth: 7.75 kilos of joy

A Russian mum has given birth to the world's biggest newborn girl in 50 years. Delivered by caesarean, ‘little’ Nadya Khalina weighed in at 7.75 kilos and hit the headlines immediately.
The girl is the eleventh child in a large family – in numbers and size – living in the Altai region of Siberia. Her three brothers and seven sisters all weighed in at more than five kilos.
“When we got the baby we saw she was really huge. We were amazed but we didn't show it. The main thing is that Nadya and her mother are doing fine,” says obstetrician Galina Anufrieva at the natal clinic.

Nadya's big arrival did not go unnoticed by the community. The family got a washing machine, clothes and toys, and even a computer. While the local council built a playground in front of the Khalins’ apartment block.
The couple now intend to apply to the Guinness Book of Records – Nadya could well be recognised as the heaviest baby born in the last half-a-century.
The biggest baby in the world to survive weighed 10.2 kilos, and was born in Italy in 1955.
