President Dmitry Medvedev has been flying high... while keeping his feet firmly on the ground. During a visit to St Petersburg, the Russian leader tested one of the country’s latest helicopter simulators.
With a firm hand at the controls, he flew the chopper from a virtual airport to a drilling site at sea, landing it safely.
It’s not the first time Medvedev has climbed into an aircraft cabin. Earlier this year he spent 30 minutes flying a Russian SU-34 fighter jet.

How to spot talent? China looks to genesIn an attempt to identify infant prodigies for further specialized training, authorities of the Chongqing municipality in south-western China have launched a program employing complex genetic tools. |
All well and good - I'm glad he is taking an interest in the Russian aviation industry but I fear it is too late, What has any post-Soviet government done for their civil aviation industry? Nothing! Every airline is busy buying American or European airliners! The great design teams at Ilyushin, Tupolev and Yakovlev are all gone....nothing is replacing their ageing models. Does anyone in the Russian government care? Nope! Oh, sorry yes, there is the tiny SSJ. Big deal. It is really just too sad and too shocking to think about.
He's a great guy and definitely great for us, but the cyclic pitch movements, didn't match the flight. He is not a pilot, so what is the need to pretend. He can play with a simulator like anyone else, he started to get the hang in the end. Just be a great president! That is all we ask!

Fake flying. His cockpit body movements do not match the flight behavior of the chopper.
