The new ceasefire set for May 5 could prove a turning point in the Syrian conflict. If the truce fails, an international peacekeeping intervention might become a reality.

Syria has chemical weapons and will use them if invaded by the West.It also has many S-300 anti-aircraft missiles. It has anti-ship missiles. Syria is much better armed than Lybia.
Maurice2014 wrote in #3It's all about building a pipeline from Iraq to Israel, just like Afghanistan was about a pipeline from the Caspian Sea through Qandahar. The Observer, Sunday 20 April 2003: "Plans to build a pipeline to siphon oil from newly conquered Iraq to Israel are being discussed between Washington, Tel Aviv and potential future government figures in Baghdad. The plan envisages the reconstruction of an old pipeline, inactive since the end of the British mandate in Palestine in 1948, when the flow from Iraq's northern oilfields to Palestine was re-directed to Syria. ........US intelligence sources confirmed to The Observer....and the war in Iraq to safeguard Israel's energy supply as well as that of the United States." Wow, Maurice, who knew. Thank you for explaining this. Is the Caspian Sea oil also a motive for destroying Yugoslavia? Still trying to piece that one together myself...us poor villagers are dumbed down from real motives.
New World Order wrote in #10@ Vann7: Just answer one question. Imagine that there are elections in Syria soon -- as there are most probably going to be -- and president Assad gets diselected. (The Syrian president is elected by Syrian citizens in a direct election.) Do you think he will surrender power just like that? This is the best idea all week! It will expose two things: 1) The majority of Syrians love their President. 2) The snipers causing all of this chaos for some reason do not have id cards to vote legally in Syria. The sooner an election happens, the better. It would quite possibly save tens of thousands of lives. When the tens of thousands of NATO strike sorties start up, it will be misery for the good people of Syria. (it already happened in Libya, at least 30,000 dead.) A very good idea, NWO.
This story is ridiculous. All of this ceasefire and peace talk is window dressing. The West wants a Yes-man leading Syria and that's what it plans to install unless Russia and China step up. And if they are too afraid to step up, then they will need to admit that the new barbarians were at their gate and they passively bought time instead of drawing the line where it needed to be drawn. -fin-
Only a complete bufoon would not know that the so called Syrian opposition are no more than a bunch of paid rebels from Qatar,Turkey and other American lackey states, the Syrian army are showing remarkable restraint in my opinion when faced with these evil terrorists.the legitimate Syrian opposition wants nothing to do withthese disgusting paid mercenary rats and I rather suspect that the shills on here who are supporting the 'rebels' are fully aware that there isnt a chance in hell of this Israeli sponsored rebellion being succesfull as quite simply the Syrian people dont want a Sunni islamic fundamentalist state.the whole world knows what is going on in Syria and it is no different to the western sponsored terrorism that's killing many innocent civilians in Iraq, the grand plan of the americans to bring more death and confusion to peaceful countries of the middle east has reached a stumbling block in Syria thanks to the decision o the Russians and Chinese to call a halt to these murderous escapadesThe tide has now turned and the scurrilous rats have been exposed, the neocon dream of 'the American century' is finished in only the twelth year of the new millenium.
No military intervention should be allowed. Forcing/imposing things have never been the right way as it may lead to further chaos. Instead, I suppose it is better to engage Assad to resolve if firing still persists...always engaging the parties to resolve, and find their own way how to deal with it (means it comes from their own willingness) - That way, all concerns would be heard. Elections should be done - and Assad MUST come down if not elected.
Thank you Canadia for your kind comment.
You can find this Western educated low life children of the new Post-CCCP Russian oligarchs in any major Western city and usually nobody pays attention to them because they are not that important. They have money and nothing else. One thing you count on is Mother Russia will get her revenge and she will clean house at the right moment.
Peace and solidarity to all Russian people and to all humanity and to all who love peace and justice- not war, imperialism and domination.
Forget it, not gonna happen. Assad is in control, the west is in no position to start a war in Syria, and the time that Russia would sit "patiently in the sidelines" is long past.
New World Order (not that fake new world order fa - ot) I understand your concern and as I know the russian mafia who grabbed the power after USSR collapsed and what they did they sent their kids to educate to western colleges and now you see the results - those well educated western spies and agents work as a Russia's elite againt the interests of the country and russian people
As long as the western economy doesn't collapse, the American Empire will get its own way in Syria. One way or another it will get the regime change that it desires, while Russia will probably sit patiently on the sidelines.

The violence in Syria will continue as long as Moscow and Beijing give the green light for Assad's dictatorship. Feeling his back secured Assad will continue to kill innocent protesters without batting an eye.
------------ -------------------- -------------"innoce nt protesters"? since the begining the "protesters" were killing police and army personel and stealing there uniforms, i dare you to go and kill a cop or army person and see what happens to you fool. The whole thing wreaks of FUKUS/saudi terrorism, saudi arabia is the biggest financier of terrorism and yet the yanks are best friends.
The majority of comments I read, on this article, I find total rubbish and reflect a group of people that have no real knowledge of Syria the middle east or elswhere for that matter. The sabre rattling of certain west European states and the USA are no more than the dying embers of their own economic miscalculations in the world and now suffer the consequences. Their answer sell weapons to dictators and give money to thugs to destablize regions where they are now losing control. In Syria they have failed. The Syrian government do have the situation under control and that is why the sudden demand for UN monitors to be on the ground. At the same time western powers will continue to try and destroy Syria. They will not succeed and neither will they attempt a combined military strike. They do not have the finance, and such an act would ignite the whole middle east. Syria has an extremely efficient military of 460000 personel and can become 500000. The west is not stupid. There will not be a war in Syria, but there will be elections and paid thugs will not be able to stop those elections, no matter how hard they try.
Wherever there are six million Jews there should be concentration camps nearby. You can't afford the risk. It's good that the ones in Europe are being kept in good condition. You never know...
Okay. You should try to read my comments properly, please. The problem with many people is that they are not able to focus properly when they see so many words at a time. Some people are apparently used to only getting their information fed to them through the tv set.
My question was: Do you believe that Russia only has state controlled media? Not: Do you believe that only Russia has state controlled media?
Since you are not even able to understand the question, I suppose you are not able to answer it either. And your comment proves that. The truth is Russia has both, private and state owned media. So please try to calm down a little bit and don't pretend you know everything. The truth is you have certain emotions about everything and try to rationalize them with your preconceived notions and prejudices. That is understandable. But insulting people here because of their genes and the like is not. In fact it is tasteless.
No w, my region is not flooded by six million Jews and I do not know how you get the impression that I am racist. I am just trying to put myself in the position of these people, something which you are obviously not capable of. In fact, I think the rather chauvinistic comments you are posting prove who is the real racist here.
Obvious ly you are so uninformed of what even your own media have publicised about the neccisity to invade Iraq and Afghanistan that you cannot even remotely follow my reasoning here. So since you have left the building I'd suggest you lock the door and throw away the keys.
