a few reasons to keep it.
recycle refurbish whack it back out for business. or what an artifact to keep and show the world a peice of modern history, the fact that this has gone a drif for nearly or over a year and not hit anything thus far shows that it should be kept. it survived a tsunami it still floats. pardon the pun didnt want to jump on board with the anti yank but i cant help it when they decide Stuff it lets sink it. cant help not being anti yank at this time.

maybe another country may need it for the war effort as the gulf is getting pretty busy. peace out may the force be with us all

Typical Yankee approach, to lazy to do the job properly. Wasted resources and environmental damage mean nothing to them. Salvage is apparently not in their vocabulary. Will the owners be compensated? Americans involved----not likely! Mike, it's too bad you were not on the boat! how tough some of you sh*t talkers are on the internet, let that radioactive sh*t go to your sh*thole country, free, come and get it big mouth.

So the morons just sank it, putting all of that fuel and waste and GARBAGE into the ocean? That was a total waste of money. Why didn't they send it back to Japan or at least sell it off to a salvage company. The US government is wasting our money.

I live on the Canadian West Coast where the ship was drifting. Local news says that the salvage guys went on board and found the bottom of the boat covered in fuel and oil. Checked it out and there was not much worth salvaging, but the wreckage will make a nice dive reef, I guess. The captain of the salvage boat says he spent $15000 in fuel costs to find that out.

Among other reasons, federal and Left Coast Whackjob state 'viro regulations make marine salvage or ; scrapping a nightmare for any private enterprise.

Cheaper to make of the Ryou-Un Maru what the U.S. Navy (and, apparently, the Coasties, too) call a "SinkEx" or weapons exercise designed to culminate in the sinking of the target hulk.

I'll admit that I'm curious about how and why the Navy left this job to the Hooligans of the USCG. I would've thought it the ideal opportunity for a bunch of Surface Warfare types in a Pacific Fleet destroyer squadron to make bangety-bangety with their own naval rifles.

I wonder if anyone checked the Radiation levels on the ship before sinking it

If I was a marine on that coastguard ship, I would love to target practice on that floating junk. Wouldnt care what's cheaper to sink it or take it apart.

Honestly who cares about it? Ship is sunk it's no husrting anyone:).

@bgbgbg you've obviously never seen a bunch of underpaid indonesians tear up a massive cargo boat in only a few minutes.... trust me recycling boats is one of the cheapest and most lucrative operations. mostly done in southeast asia. you should research a bit before talking about something....

Why destroy it when you can reuse it? if it could drift for so fcking long doesnt it mean that its ok and some minor repairs are needed but its a funcional boat?
Why waste money rebuilding this ship, its not like it was worth much anyways. It would cost more to recycle than its usual cost.

@Soussi, there is a real difference between building an Anti Missile Defense system along the border of Russia and sinking an abondoned ship near the coast of Canada. The first one is useless provoking of war, the second is just plain stupid. 3 words.. EPA..

one word.. Hypocrits..

i n all seriousness.. a Nation that lectures other Nations and its own citizens about what they ARNT allowed to do to then behaves with impunity or surreptitiously whenever or in blantant contridiction to its own policies and bends its Own regulations and Guidelines whenever it feels an itch to do so.. its just screwed up logic the U.S Government run by over Zelous control freaks that wouldnt hesitate to admonish othe Nations for Polluting the Oceans by not first REMOVING the Diesel and Oils from within the cargo hold before sinking it if in fact the owner didnt want his boat.. OH wait.. my bad.. what does that matter.. it posed a Threat to National Security by threatening the shipping lanes and needed to be with appropriately.. ( no time to hook a tow line to it... ( and really ppl.. Radio Active.. ? the boat was way out in the ocean long before the Reactor melt down.. get a clue and STOP justifying STUPIDITY!

oh yeah sorry.. forgot your logic.. BP in the Gulf never happened and all the Wild life is Fine.. shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh dont post the carcases for people to see cos it may offend people that dont like reality and would ruin their appitite..

yeah iknow.. whats wrong with just a boat load of diesel oil being added to the marine eco system..
