A mighty predator! Admiral Shapashnikov should have lived to see this distroyer!  By all standards the real McCoy!

Missile interceptors on our borders and surrounding seas, missile interceptors in your surrounding seas – did you honestly, ever think the result would be different! Will you feel safer with this independent approach? You can’t escape a bear, you can’t outrun him, you can’t out climb him, and you can’t even shoot him without fear, when he also has a gun. Take the message, or waste money you don't have!

What actually did it 'intercept' again? Specifically?

There is little point Russia having a navy, as most of the strategic interests are land based.

It is like NZ giving up on its Navy. Technology makes ships coffins .... floating coffins.
You are right it's not U.S. surrounded by ocean on both sides, never the less not having a navy at all is a huge disadvantage in case of war. Which is why Russia's buying French mistral ships. It always maintained nuclear subs with super sonic cruise missiles to counteract main navy power. The Artic the, black sea, Mediterranean and east coast of Russia all require navy presence. After all it is not NZ which virtually has no need for military.

While RT and some other Russian news are trumpeting Russian military "triumphs", such as the Varyag, S-300 missiles, armed personal carriers, jet fighters, etc.,etc, Western news seems to be constantly hounding our military with how deficient they are, with our military hardware that is too expensive and its plainly obsolete or broken. In Canada, we have a constant litany of news about our expensive, inadequate jet fighters that crash and our submarines that are ALL now inoperable. Could be that Russian media are playing a role in impressing foreign arms buyers (Russia is #2 in the world in arms exports), while Canadians want to punish their inept military who get us into this expensive mess. Maybe Canada should look into buying Russian arms - or maybe we can just contract with Russian military to provide a "complete care package" of military security? Can't be more expensive or ineffective than what we have now...
