this will make the US safer from jihadists and its enemies in the Muslim world. American strategy has always been to keep trouble spots divided -countries skeptical of US intentions won't worry about opposing the US if they are fighting each other. This happened in Korea, the Sino-Soviet split, Germany after WWII, the Iran-Iraq war and the recent Iraq civil war. Whenever one side seemed to overwhelm the enemy, the Americans support the losing side by providing military and economic aid, thus making the Gulf states depending on US aid, and by providing a nuclear umbrella (ie: mutually assured destruction). This benefits the US because once it leaves Iraq and Afghanistan in the next couple years, the Middle-East will be left more divided than ever, with the Middle-Eastern countries defending against themselves instead of uniting against an imperial power (the US) as bin Laden had hopped when the US slammed into the Middle-East after 9/11.

Russia needs to massively expand its naval base in Syria. It needs to also increase military sales to Iraq and start to show the US that it does not have a monopoly over the ME. If the US doesnt believe in spheres of influence then put that doctrine to the test.
