"Change of policy from the Bush and Cheney era"

The Obama administration’s decision to scrap plans for a missile defense system in Europe means a "change of policy from the Bush and Cheney era,” Guardian foreign correspondent Jonathan Steele told RT.
But, the journalist added, Obama "has not abandoned the program altogether, and of course he still insists, as the Bush-Cheney people did, it has nothing to do with Russia, it's all about Iran… And the Russians will probably need a bid of convincing to really believe that.”
"The ultimate point is this whole story is partly geopolitical,” said John Laughland from the Institute of Democracy and Cooperation. “The American political system relies very heavily on defense spending… And the anti-missile shield is almost a perfect example of how the defense ministry milks the American state. It's a system they've been talking about now for at least 30 years and which a lot of people believe will never work."
But while experts now debate how the new anti-missile system in Europe will look, many agree that one of Obama’s main purposes in changing policy on the issue is, as Steele put it, "to try to bring the Russians onboard against Iran in terms of sanctions.”

I would hope as a US citizen that this is a positive move toward warmer relations with Russia. I personally have no problem with Russians, and I think the prior administration did all they could to bring our two countries farther apart with old Cold War ideology. I have always been fascinated with the Russian language and the culture. Compared to the US, Russia has been around for quite awhile. I think that deserves respect, and I hope the US politicians realize it is beneficial to engage friendly relations with Russia instead of antagonizing them.

This has nothing to do with changing the policy of Bush-Cheney Era ---- nothing whatsoever. It may be a way to show to the completely collapsing Obama support base that he is changing Bush-Chaney foreign policy. What his experts do not understand is the following: the people who put the faith in Obama's new approach are not dummies. They know that the mealy-mouthed redefinition and undewhelming explanation for change of something in Europe is hardly what will appease them. The war in Iraq is continuing, even though Obama claims it is over. The war in Pakistan has resulted in millions of refugees, and only God knows how many innocent dead and maimed. And the war in Afghanistan is taking a nasty turn, with the clear objective to migrate the war to the north, to put to flame what was once the only stable part of Afghanistan. This flame is deliberately stoked, so that the chaos of war will spill over into Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan. And if Clintonistas think that we are dumb, and can be that easily brough back to give them our support, they must be out of their mind. And, let us see, seven more bases in Columbia? This brings the total world wide to what, close to 1,000? This administration is going to find out, to its grief, that betrayal is a bitter fruit. As I am old enough not to be disappointed, I see what it does to the young. And the Iran story is clearly boring. There is nothing Russia can do to help US, short of inventing WMD in Iran. All puffed up stories, and no substance, as there is not a single data to point out at the enrichment above the energy grade. And there was no diversion of nuclear material, that much IAEA confirmed. So, let's go with Israel screaming at the top of their lungs about Iran's ambitions, while sitting on a stockpile of nukes! O, what a mess.
