The 18th anniversary of the Estonian ruling party has been marred by harsh criticism from public activists who accuse the leadership of bribery and jeering at democratic principles.

On Wednesday, 17 Estonian intellectuals and public members applied to the government with an open letter. They demand an end to the stagnation and what they see as a monopoly on power by the Reform Party, which has been ruling the state since 2007.

“The democracy in Estonia is ruining right before our eyes,” the activists stated, as cited by ERR News. “The dialogue between government and the public has turned into a monologue: 'We have a mandate.' 'There is no alternative to us.' This is not the language of democracy."

If citizens have a chance to influence the country’s politics only once in four years – during the elections, democracy turns into an empty shell, the authors of the letter believe.

The critics insist that it is not a crisis of the ruling party only – the entire Estonian political system may lose trust. However, the Estonian president, the parliament and the government have so far expressed no wish to change the situation.

“If the system is not able to reform itself, civic society must summon an alternative institution in which representatives of the community would be predominant," the activists, stated. They did not clarify though what exactly that institution would be like.

In response to recent criticism of Estonia’s political system and the ruling power, President Toomas Hendrik Ilves vowed to gather a meeting between parties’ representatives, public activists and expert on state law to discuss possible solutions.

He also warned the opponents against making statements on behalf of the entire nation.

“Just as the government cannot speak for all the public, the critics of the government can’t claim they represent the entire free society, no matter how noble and right their intentions are,” the president added.

To "O", who thinks RT runs no anti-Estonian propaganda -- here is a brief example of this non-existent propaganda. It is just a small representation of pages and pages of titles alone of similar articles that an RT search brings up. And this takes no account of pages-long lists of similar titles of anti-Latvian and anti-Lithuanian articles.

-- and so it goes, an almost endless supply of anti-Baltic vitriol, overwhelmingly based on nonsense distortions or outright lies, recapitulated throughout Russian media. For an analysis of the rationale underlying this remarkable phenomenon, visit the home page of Estonian Security Police, and go to "Annual Reviews".  In the 2010 Review read pages 8-14, and in the 2011 Review read pages 7-15.

Google search for all pages on rt.com ("site:rt.com") shows "About 4,030,000 results", search for Estonia on rt.com ("site:rt.com Estonia") shows "About 6,770 results". That is, Estonia is mentioned in less than 0.002 of RT's pages, including comments. You can relax, nobody on RT cares about Estonia enough to intentionally attack it...

> ... "ERR News - Estonian Public Broadcasting", and run a search filtered by "Russia".

Fir st, it's not a site with international news, so it's not comparable with RT. I can't see a single positive article about Russia because there are no articles about Russia at all, the search for "Russia" gives me only local Estonian news related to Russia, e.g.

Farmers Frustrated With Russian Barriers to Pig Trade

MP Warns of Russia's Aggressive Ambitions

I t's not a problem to find even pro-western (and pro-estonian) sites in Russia that have more visitors than your 'example', but I think you'll agree that it means nothing. Your example is not an example at all.

> Estonian media doesn't go out of its way to praise Russia (or Peru or Burkina Faso). But neither does it go out of its way to trash Russia, like Russia constantly does with Estonia and the Baltics.

Fear has magnifying eyes. I'm sure e.g. that RT's article "Three rare Amur leopards born in Tallinn Zoo" is an especially evil propaganda against Estonia.

"O" writes, "Funny to hear that from the Estonian propagandist on the Russian site who never said a single positive word about Russia."

My purpose is not to glorify Russia (or Peru or Burkina Faso, for that matter). My aim is to bring facts to bear onto Russia's anti-Estonian attack propaganda. Very often such facts are not complimentary to Russia, but that is not my fault. Facts relate to what has actually happened, and facts about Russia in the Baltics relate to what Russia did in the Baltics.

If Russian media didn't constantly issue attack propaganda against Estonia, I would have nothing to say about Russia at all. Just as I have nothing to say about Peru or Burkina Faso for the similar reason.

Howev er, as for positive words about Russia, I have on many occasions mentioned that I enjoy Russian music, theatre and literature, and that many Russian people are delightfully warm and spontaneous, and very pleasant company. Unfortunately the same is not true of Russian policy towards the Baltics.

"O" also asks, "How many positive articles about Russia can we find on Estonian sites?" See for yourself. If you speak Russian visit the Russian version site of Estonia's leading daily newspaper, "Postimees". Or if you don't, visit the English language site of "ERR News - Estonian Public Broadcasting", and run a search filtered by "Russia". Estonian media doesn't go out of its way to praise Russia (or Peru or Burkina Faso). But neither does it go out of its way to trash Russia, like Russia constantly does with Estonia and the Baltics.
