When has there ever been monoculturalism? Not since slavery evolved, as in Rome or Greece, has there been some unaculture in Europe, so what in the world are they talking about? Not reality, that is for sure. Monocultures only exist within isolated tribes or very isolated regions. It is enormously difficult for two cultures to harmonize, however. There is constant friction, even when it is very minimal, and even when the religion is the same (as with most of the Mexican immigrants and American Catholics, who number about 64 million). I wonder how Constantine and all those Christians did it, because I suspect the process of Christianizing everyone was deeply brutal. We really, really need a Constantine type now -- or some force that will create a superstructure/culture for the life we lead now, but it cannot be brutal, that no longer works in such a high tech economic base. In any event, right now this is all about sending the pesky guest workers home -- now that the economy is not going to expand anymore. It occurs to me how duped the left has been ... multiculturalism was used as a way to enable importation of cheap labor. Now that the labor is not needed, neither is the multiculturalism I guess. Are you finished with identity politics? Can we ever get back to the issue of the working class and commodity production?

Islam is an ideology which states that it should be predominant culturally, religiously and socially. When another culture stiffens its back to assert these selfsame principles, the cry goes up that this is unfair. When Saudi Arabia allows Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus and Bahais to practice their own worship -- which is illegal there -- then I will think more tolerantly of Islam. Until then, I think Europe need lean towards the example of Islam itself as practiced by the "guardians of the two mosques" -- a practice which is utter and complete religious intolerance. As supposed moderates in Europe become tolerant of intolerance, then logic has been stood on its head and becomes meaningless. Regarding the lingering accusation of colonialism laid against the West by supposed scholars and thinkers in the West, among the greatest colonialists throughout history is the Muslim ummah. Such absurdities as others have commented herein shows that there is little pride in them for Western culture and achievements. Being fools in this, they cannot see the faults of all men -- which includes Muslims. As to identity politics, the socialists and Muslims in Europe have played this game out thoroughly and now wish to cry foul when others follow their lead. It is time to defend all that has been and remains good in the various Western cultures, to which self-loathing Westeners have too long been blind.

None of you people who comment against this issue (the failure of multiculturalism) have obviously any experience with muslims or islam. YES, multiculturalism is good. We are many people and we all have our own religions, traditions, art, culture, customs etc. But the way many if not all European countries are, that is a soup of all kinds of people with all kinds of background and are facing bots social and religious division, as well as a horrible rise in crime and extremism especially from muslim immigrants. The way we are, living on a round planet with many countries bordering one another we WILL have some kind of influence on each other and yes no country will ever be isolated. But no country can exists as it is if people from vastly different cultures move in to live together. This has never ever worked, even in USSR there was a kind of social-nationalism where everybody was a friend but they all were kept in their place. Both tigers and bears live sometimes in same ares, but both stay apart so to avoid a conflict. Putting all animals - predators, pray, and everything inbetween never works, that`s why they are in different cages in the zoo. People however are expected to live just fine if they are vastly different from one another? This will never work. This planet is not so small, that everybody HAS to live with everybody. They all have their own countries - go live there!

It reminds me of the story of the famous French landscape painter "Papa" Corot ("the father of landscape painting") who painted outdoors, and who , when asked which side he would support in the French Revolution, replied " I'm going landscape painting , and I will be back when it's over!" The problem of religion and politics is that followers become fanatical and bad things are done in the name of religions. It's sad when people feel the need to kill other people because of their religious differences or lack of religion.

That particular verse translates to: "Ye are the best of peoples, evolved for mankind, enjoining what is right, forbidding what is wrong, and believing in Allah. If only the People of the Book(Christians & Jews) had faith, it were best for them: among them are some who have faith, but most of them are perverted transgressors." Don't be offended by the last part of the verse before understanding the whole Qur'an, it says many times about the many "Muslims" who are transgressors, too.
