Ukraine is marking 18 years since it declared independence from the Soviet Union. President Yushchenko addressed his people while the Autonomous Crimea takes to streets to protest the holiday.
Well said Vladimir. I stil remember Yustsenko support for his"best man" Shaakashvili! He protect his wife and kids, when in a same time Shaakashvili commit crimes in killing someone else wifes and kids in S.Ossetia at 3 am in theirs beds, with Ukrainians weapons...Ukraine government is traitor to their own state national interest.A Usa puppet regime-he represent today a same nazi policy from 2 world war against Russian nation in Ukraine..Unless is change in their policy, future will be a horror one indeed!Russia is subject of many provocation from Ukraine-its only a matter of time till they say enough is enough! They can sign what ever they like with Natonazis(this include Baltic states wich try to wipe out Russia minority with rasist(nazis)policis today) -nothing will save them from rightfull Russia reaction! This is a most danger time in ours history, and i am suprise that people of those states almost in silence, peacefully watch how their govenments with wrong policy(war provoking) lead them to grave yard as a states and as a nations. To any nation on the globe is clear, that Ukraine state interest is not by any stardards to worsen -but opposite-to make full strategy friendship with Russia as first, and formost priority! I honestly hope that with change of power will come to that..if not, wait for your judgment day-it will come for sure...
From what I have heard, many people in Ukraine joke that Yuschenko has his suitcases already packed (with cash), ready to head for the USA when everything goes bad for him. Timoschenko seems to be playing a fairly shrewd game, steering the middle ground between west and east - and will probably be the next president. If I was Timoschenko , I would try to calm the nationalist and anti-Russian talk and try to address the real issues: economy, jobs, trade, infrastructure, schools, healthcare, etc. If the people of the Crimea made a bid for separation from Ukraine (and possibly joining with Russia), I doubt that the Ukranian administration could do much to stop it. They don't have the resources and many in the Ukranian military may be unwilling to engage with Russian troops or Crimean citizens Whilst there might be harsh words from politicians of the US and other NATO or EU countries, I can't see any of them wanting to get involved (as with Georgia). At the end of the day, self-interest is paramount: EU countries want to know they will have gas in the winter.

Ukraine most certainly will not divide in two - where exactly do you propose drawing a line?? The differences between east and west - apart from a few extreme views on either side - are grossly exaggerated, What is not helpful to Ukraine is the continued malevolence of the Kremlin toward it - this will continue after Yushchenko has gone (just as interference in Georgian affairs will continue when Saakashvili departs). One thing that does worry many Ukrainians though is whether Timoshenko has been bought - like so many Ukrainian politicians - by the Kremlin. Either way, though, the country will not return to the Kuchma/Kravchuk era.

Ukraine will eventually either become divided in two parts, western and pro-russian eastern, or become integrated with Russia again. There is no third alternative to that. The very same situation that is now happening to Russia and Russians in Ukraine, has already happened to Serbs in other ex-Yu republics. The main difference is that Serbia was too weak to protect its citizens, as the Serbes were bombed two times (Croatia/Bosnia and Kosovo) followed by ethnic cleansing of more than 1 million Serbs under NATO supervision, but Russia is too strong for such a development to become possible. Under this leadership Ukraine flows towards disintegration. NATO will never be able to do with Russia the same it did with Serbs. Nobody will be able to help Ukraine if it persists to the present course of generating disputes with Russia. Russia has learned the lesson from the Serbs. Simple as that!
