Where I live, there is a city ordinance that restricts the heights of buildings. This is to prevent them from obscuring the view of the natural landmark for which the city is named. We also have very strict restrictions on remodeling and renovation of 'heritage' buildings. In many places new buildings must 'fit in' with the existing buildings in the area. It's a matter of maintaining the aesthetic and historic integrity of the area. I can therefore understand the feelings of the Swiss who would like Switzerland to maintain it's historical architecture and character. One solution to the Swiss issue might be zoning restrictions. But, in the end, if the Swiss want Switzerland to retain it's Swiss character, I can't blame them for feeling that way. Threatening individuals and countries with jihad because they refuse to sacrifice their own cultural character and beliefs in order to accommodate the demands of Islamic immigrants to the country, only serves to highlight the intolerance of those making the demands. The Swiss have welcomed these people into their country, and in return, instead of integrating into their adopted homeland as so many other immigrants before them have, the Swiss wind up being threatened unless they change their country to suit Islam. Sorry, but if minarets are so important to them, then they should have emigrated to Islamic countries sharing their beliefs and customs.

If the noise levels of the call to prayer is the concern (ie affecting non-muslim local residents) then the sensible way to deal with it is via noise level restrictions and adequate policing of such. It seems to be however that practical solutions to legitimate concerns are being used by intolerant islamophobes to push their racist screed. Somehow I`ve never heard of any muslim nations being critical of say discrimination of Christians, or the facts that many Christians have per-say no right to even exist in muslim countries with sharia law.
