At their 60th anniversary summit NATO members have appointed a new Secretary General, agreed continued support for the U.S. strategy in Afghanistan and announced the resumption of the Russia-NATO Council’s work.

NATO was the major alliance left standing, while the Warsaw pact disintegrated and some of America’s other alliances also collapsed, said Stanley Kober, research fellow at the Washington-based CATO Institute.
Ukraine and NATO have agreed to transit nonmilitary cargo via Ukrainian territory to support international security forces in Afghanistan. Earlier, the United States agreed on the same with some Central Asian states.
On April 4, the alliance that accounts for more than two thirds of world’s military spending is celebrating its 60th anniversary. A relic of the Cold War, NATO is trying to find a new role in the modern world.
