Here we go again. The West cannot now pretend that they do not know of Georgia's behavior in violation of international law. It is really simple. Georgia cannot require that merchant shipping seeks permission from Georgia. The internationally accepted UN Convention on the Laws of the Sea allows for free merchant marine traffic in territorial waters of any country. Military shipping, however, requires permission. Georgia has broken international law not only by trying to substitute its internal law for the international law, but is also provoking violence. Why is the Turkish captain sentenced to such a lengthy prison sentence, when he did not violate the international law? Georgia, under the pretext of boarding and inspecting for illicit cargo, confiscated legal cargo, and may be responsible for the kidnapping of the Turkish captain. At the very least, Georgia is acting as a cowboy, with no rules to apply to its leader. If West does not condemn this, then it is just as responsible. These are the acts of a government that could not care less for the safety of merchant shipping, and is just hoping that Russia will come in to help Abkhazia defend its right to free see trade. In this, Georgia has taken a page from Israel, that against international law and the common decency does not allow humanitarian supplies to enter Gaza by sea. In both cases, their mighty patron seems to bless the behavior. And the citizens of the patron country, have long since stopped looking at themselves in the mirror. Had they tossed even a side glance view, they would have noticed that they have turned into monsters.
