Baku may have “a symmetrical response” to the extension of the lease of the Russian military base in Armenia as efforts to settle the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict bring no results, analysts warn.
Russian base is no treath to Azerbaijan and Russia also got Garbala radar center in Azerbaijan to..What I know from history about Nagorno-Karabah..I must say it is hard to solve becouse this peace of land did change owners many times by force. The q: Who was real owner? When "real history" for this land starts? For sure different history times are in play and everithing depend from which side you look....Both of them are good neigbours to Russia. It will be almost impossible to decide without hurting other side so this status quo is for now best option. It look crazy, but this status got chance to become permanent one...What I know for sure is: If any of sides try to take law in their own hands-it will forever loose right on this land...Azerbaijan and Armenia are aware of this fact! Resent happening (with new states around) show , something like that will happend again if any of sides start new war!Only option are talks...There is a plenty of time ahead to talk. I will not recomend Azerbaijan to open any foreign base(cpecial not Usa one) becouse it will have a complete different impact looking at what you hope to achieve...In the end(regardless who is involved-Usa,EU) Russia hold the key for solution and nobody else.I got sugestion(if I may) for Azerbaijan- try to become member of CSTO-membership will help a lot! Honesly, it is impossible to serve justice in this case becouse I believe that both(Armenia and Azerbaijan) got historic right to claim this land...I am sorry if I hurt any of those two nation by my comment....Thank you
The Armenian leadership view the base as a Russian commitment to the defense of Armenia should Azerbaijan attack with sufficient forces to overwhelm a purely Armenian defense. Azerbaijan has been outspending Armenia on new weapons for several years. Now a Turkish base could be viewed by Azerbaijan as a similar military guarantee. The question is would the guarantee be in the interests of the Turkish elites? And secondly would it be honored if Azerbaijan took the Georgian route to problem solving and launched an attack on Russian peacekeepers? This would be a high risk strategy for Turkey. And the likely gains would need to be commensurately large. To counterbalance the possible loses from a war with Russia to reclaim Nagorno-Karabakh for Azerbaijan. Well it doesn't make any real sense to me. But neither did the military delusions that led to the Iraq and Afghan invasions.
Mr. David Sassoon, surly you jest!? The US has done its best at trying to get a foot hold [military base ,personnel and weapons] in any area near the RF or aligned with the RF. US are "two" headed snakes. They supply weapons to both sides of conflict and pretend to be the good guys.. US RF policy: "Containment by Encirclement". That doctrine has not changed but extented by Obama. Actually US continues to agitate RF to no avail RF has EMP to make junk out of US sophisticated weapons and Kaliningrad snuggled up to Poland the hateful US client nation state. Hooking your wagon to the US spells death to whomever does such a stupid deed! Haven't you as well as the world seen the evil deeds of US in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine etc...any place they go using force, "economic terrorism" or coercion? I think the answer is YES. Mr. Sassoon I know exactly why you put your question out for the gullible!
What is the point of Azerbaijan hosting a Turkish base, Turkey could never fight Russia, they would be completely overwhelmed, should Azerbaijan pull a Saakashvilli... So yes, the US is the only country that could effectively have a base there, a base the Russians would respect. But Azeri people are practically Iranian, so as long as the US is hostile towards Iran, they will never be offered an Azeri base.
@sj This is obviously not true - Poland has nothing near Kaliningrad Oblast from the US - what should interest You is that both sides (Poland and RF) decided in joint comission to deactivate most lethal part of their arsenal and retreive it back.

Why not pair with The United States?
