It is not a question of whether Russia is with the West in general. It is a question of whether Russia is with Europe in particular . Now that Russia has demonstrated solidarity with European concerns let us see if this is reciprocated by the EU. The Russian government wants help modernizing its economy, visa free travel with the EU etc. Nothing stands in the way of any of this except Cold War residues. And the stratagems of non European states.

The article is a rambling piece of non-information, if I ever saw one. And who does not know the sources it quotes? At present, the Iranian issue is nothing short of embarrassing for Russia. Its reputation for reliability and stability has been trashed in the eyes of the world, and that world is whole lots bigger then Europe and US. So, short term effect is a real mess for Russia. Europe has for the longest time had the reputation for the lack of reliability. China has called EU "not a partner", as it cannot be counted on to make independent decisions. So, it is of no consequence what Europe does. In fact, Europe has been so spooked over the actions of rating agencies and the attacks on Euro, that it will not breathe independently for a while. While EU economies may suffer, at this point being off the crisis list is more then good enough for them. But Russia has much more to loose. Should military action be taken against Iran, it will be virtually on Russian border, as the two countries share border at Caspian Sea. The reaction by the islamic extremism will be increased as a result, and the consequences for Russia internally still to be quantified. One has to always allow for the appearances to be deceiving, and that nobody really knows the real situation. This whole situation may be a deception within deception, like a Russian doll. But I do find the article written without concern for facts. There are no outstretched hands to Iran. In fact, it is not clear what exactly Iran is supposed to do, or questions to answer. IAEA has, under the changed leadership, become another pointless agency, not making anything clear whatsoever. If indeed Iran is expected to solve anything or reply to anything, why is not this "something" made clear in the media. It seems to me that media is lazy, and is parroting a simplistc line. It would be much more appropriate for media to express its ignorance on the matter. What is

“If the Iranian leadership actually wants to come to an agreement, then it is Barack Obama’s administration that presents a window of opportunity to it,” believes Dmitry Trenin, director of the Carnegie Moscow Center. However, “a hand extended to Iran a year and a half ago is continuing to hang in the air, and an unpleasant scenario of a forceful action becomes quite real,” What a load of rubbish, propaganda straight from the US State Department. A hand has been extended? All I see is continuing US covert support for Jundallah terrorists, continuing punative sanctions, and an arrogant disdainful demand that Iran unilaterally give up its rights under the NPT. Same old arrogant, belligerent behaviour from the US, but delivered with a half-smile and a smattering of polite language. Finally, why does Russia put up with these filthy 5th-colomnists like Dmitry Trenin, taking the dirty money of US conservatives in payment for undermining Russian society and values? Can anyone imagine the US happily allowing Chinese state-capitalists to fund a US anti-war anti-imperialism "think tank" on US soil?

Of course Russia is with europe Russia is part of europe . The question is if europe and the United States are willing to accept Russia as a equal trading partner a country that can be expected to be treated as a equal . Or if NATO thinks they are going to bring freedom and democracy to Russia like they brought to Yugoslavia . Where evreything Yugoslavs thought was declared a crime , And evreything worth owning became the private property of some western corperations balance sheet . If this is the kind of development the western countries plan on bringing to Russia ,The so called western democracies should have sided with Hitler in the second W War . I think they could maybe have defeated Stalin then . Yes Russia would love to modernise more than their weapons of war . But after Russia saw what happend to Yugoslavia , Russia would be real fools to relax their concentration . Russia has had the most Reasonable foreign policy of any country since Gorbachev took office and the end of the Soviet Union . Yeltsin was betrayed in Yugoslavia U.S. general Wesley Clark issued orders to just shoot the Russian soldiers . And Germany smarted off and told the Russians you can't do anything about it . These little transgressions are not the proper way to treat a powerfull foreign country that you respect as a equal . Considering evreything thats already happend I figure Russia has bent over backwards to stay on friendly terms with the western democracies . We forced Russia to find other friends and yes Russia wants to stay friends with Iran ,

Bianca! You got it right. What is going on with Iranian nuclear issue is confusing everybody and that is because the parties involved ( US, Iranian government and IAEA) don't want to finish it. The US likes the boss of IAEA Albaradei. Why?? Because he streaches and delays and prolongs the conflict. He says he likes the job and wants to continue, so.... With Russia coming on the US side it puts pressure on US and Iran to finish the show faster, therefore you must see new conflicts being created between them, like the Iranian government financing and arming Alqaeda and Taliban. These two governments need the conflict. the Iranians need it to survive and supress the domestic opposition and the US to produce and sell weapons.

Gazza! The leader of the Jandullah Abdolmalek Rigi was lured by Richard Hollbrook and trapped by US and Pakistani inteligence services and handed over to the Iranian government recently. He was executed 2 weeks ago after a funny confession on Iranian TV. He, like you thought that the US and Iranian governments were enemies and thought the US wanted to cooperate with him against the Iranian government. He was a smart drug smugler turned into a naive politician. The Iranian government didn't like him because he was their competitor in importing drugs from Afghanistan to Iran.!!
