According to the article, “Lyakin-Frolov also noted that matters of history should be left to historians, not politicians, and that the key aim should be to establish good neighbourly relations between the two countries.” This strikes me as being fairly hypocritical when measured against Russia’s policies and actions. Russian politicians chronically conscript history to serve as a template for their own legitimacy (witness the ever-expanding May 9 celebrations that serve the same function as the ancient Roman circus, ie, to keep a restive population content and aligned with the State). They also endlessly use their take history as weapon with which to politically raid neighbouring countries (the Baltics are supposed to be celebrating Nazism and are criticised for disenfranchising legal Russian settlers rather than praised for enfranchising illegal occupation-era colonists). For a Duma leader to now piously turn around and say that history should be left to historians, not politicians, makes one feel a little ill. Especially in view of the fact that Russia still restricts access to historical archives of the 1930s and 40s, thus ensuring that history remains the province of politicians, not historians. It is also offensive to assume that anyone who doesn’t agree with Moscow’s political distortions of history is therefore automatically a “Russophobe”. This is a nonsense every bit on a par with the suggestion that anyone who took up arms against the Red Army invaders of the Baltics was a Nazi.

It was certainly a good thing that the Soviets invaded Poland. The plotting Poles were planning and organising terrorism and subversion in the Soviet Union. We see today the misery and suffering that terrorism causes. But the Poles were engaged in exactly these deeds. Many millions would have died in the Polish plan. It was a bold and very successful routing of the plotting Poles. The Soviets always. like any other nation had both a right and a duty to deal using full force with any state sponsored terrorist activities. It is a clear message, if you are a state terrorist, then you are risking losing your state. In this case the Soviet Union acted legally and with great effect. We must always act against state terrorism in all its forms. The plotting Poles today are starting to repeat the same games in the Caucuses. We must be clear again not to stand for their underhanded brand of evil illegal activities. Dealing with the plotting Poles, is as relevent today as it has always been. Its good we remember history. This time we stand as Russians against their particular brand of orchestrated state terror.

It has taken 70 years for Moscow to announce to the world that back in 1939 the Poles, singlehandedly (and on horseback, presumably), were fixing to overthrow the mighty Soviet Union. The same Moscow that supposedly has a thing against "re-writing history". Awesome.

@Marzipan .. throughout the centuries Poland was hostile towards Russia and .. always started the wars first...robbing .. murdering .. raping .... when the sides have turned they have suddently started to play the victims and blame us for everything ... i'm sorry but you have brought that on yourselves ... it's your own fault ... IT'S YOU WHO NEEDS A LESSON IN HYSTORY MARZIPAN ... You can thank ancestors your for that ... According to you ideology ... the current German population is apologizing for Nazi crimes ... so you have suffered for the atrocities that Baltics have comminted against Russians. So stop crying ... you have deserved it ... I´M RIGHT AND YOU ARE WRONG. Go and preach your onesided propaganda elsewhere. This nonsense here is purely political ... even if russia would appologize .. what do you think that just would stop with their propaganda.. no. Besides Poland was always the agressor .. we simply did to them what they were doing to us for centuries.

Alex, your like represent a sort of revisionist history that lacks accountability and a pessimistic view of everyone else. The USSR's People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs massacred thousands of Polish Officers, between 1939-41 1.5 million(63.1% Polish, 7.4 Jewish) in the Soviet controlled areas were deported, a third of 320,000 Polish POW's captured by the Red Army were murdered in 1939. When the Soviet Union is denied an anti-German pact by France and the UK, what does the USSR do? They sign a "non-aggression" treat with Nazi Germany (Molotov-Ribbentrop pact). And Russian sare suprised when eastern Europeans have a suspect attitude toward Russia. And today, Russia take a high and mighty attitude toward the US invasion of Afghanistan, as though they forget the USSR invaded Afghanistan a few decades ago with an occupation of 10 years killing over 1 million with 1.2 disabled. But Russia won't take blame for that either because it wouldn't be in good taste, right? It would be best if those never accounting for crimes look at their own intellectual dishonesty.

Alex asks what would happen if Russia should apologise for crimes against humanity that Russians committed under the Soviet flag. Pretty much the same thing as happened when Germany made similar apologies. Individual victims and their loved ones found closure to their suffering, victimised countries were able to set aside their anger at and suspicion of Germany, a rogue nation redeemed itself from the shame of its history, contempt and fear amongst neighbours was replaced with respect and trust, genuine partnerships began to be established, political and economic co-operation started to grow, and a better future was created for everyone.

Alex - well said, the nonsense is well known. The Polish parliment's actions are very silly and to be frank childish and immature. But that seems to be the hallmark of eastern EU members. They mix politics and law which has always been a potent cocktail to instill hatred and division, But these east Europeans thrive on hatred and conflict. It is how they try to maintain power and control their people. Poland is a worrying country, it has been engaged in state terrorism for some considerable time. A big question needs to be asked by Russia, and that is why Poland have an Iraqi chemical weapons expert working for them? Russia must never trust the plotting Poles, they are eternal Russophobes, so Russia should bring international pressure to be applied to understand what chemical and other programs they are running. Ignoring state Polish state terrorism is not and never has been an option with Poland. We need be on our guard at all times.

@Marzipan ... apologizing for well deserved "beating"seems" out of place to me ... hasn't Poland attacked us 1920 or 1921 ... have they apologized to us ???? and a few years later 1939 they were showing an aggressive attitude towards us again ... that's is why SU has attacked poland this time first ... and considering the fact that they have attacked us several times in the past .. the the decision was right. Apologize for your mistakes first and then we'll see ... lol ... stronger ties ... friendship. the germans are still being demonized to this day in every way possible from movies to videogames.
