Another triumph of Russian diplomacy. An 8 square-mile rock in the Pacific with 11,000 people becomes the world's third country apart from Russia to recognise Russia's dismemberment of Georgia. That more than one year after the event. And after seeking $50 million from Russia for this diplomatic service.

Interesting the Hypocrisy of Marzipan. He is against Stalinism and Russia in his home country Estonia. A country that denied a person health care because he could only speak Russian. Something even America does, a nation idolized by these types. Stalin broke up Ossetia into North and South. Unlike Estonia, practically having never been a nation, always been apart of other nations like Germany, Sweden, and Russia, Abkhazia has been. It also enjoyed the protection of Russia. Stalin placed these two in Georgia as a gift to his homeland. Same with Nagorno-Karabakh placed into Azerbaijan's control. US protects this regions interest and denies Abkhazia and S.Ossetia because they have a puppet regime there. Just like the Baltics they are useful tools for America. It isn't surprising to see a comment like that laughing at any sovereign nation even those who resemble their own statehood. After the collapse of the Soviet Union they had no desire to be ruled by Georgia as they tried to control the land by getting rid of the Ossetians there. I find it interesting a man who finds occupation and death so repulsive that he can't see through the fact that Georgia invaded with a large army, something which takes long preparation. Anyone with military experience understand this. I find it odd... Anyone sees Marzipan is just a Troll with an agenda to spread Anti Russian information since it flows with hypocrisy. And this is all about antagonistic politics when people make enemies out of each other. Georgia just has a dirt bag for a leader being propped up by the same National Endowment for Democracy. Georgia has only recently been antagonistic with Russia because it takes attention off their own domestic problems. We had good relationships with them and even during the whole war time never shut off energy supplies to them. Something they did to Ossetians. One can laugh all they want at any sovereign nation's decision, just reflects the character of the person.

S. Ossetia and Abkhazia's independence is more legitimate than that of the NATO military base called kosovo.

I believe that Abkhazia and South Ossetia should be recognised as independent nations or integrated into Russia. Recent events have shown that Georgia ( under Saakashvili ) abused them. Abkhazia has a limited financial and political foundation.

I think it was a strategic blunder for Russia to recognise Georgian states as independent entities. @Marzipan6 Yugoslavia and Kosovo, not to mention Southern states in Russia itself and China as well as pushing for sepratist stae in Bolivia.

Marzipan6 is a staunch defender of Georgia, and does not believe in the dismemberment of Georgia. Now, it is hardly the case. South Ossetia was once OSSETIA, without North or South, before Stalin decided that a piece can be added to his Georgia. Cannot blame dictator for exercising his power, can you Marzipan6. And Abkhazia has never, ever had anything to do with Georgia. It was an independent duchy, entered Russian Empire as a duchy, and was included in Soviet Union. However, it was recognized as independent region, that is, under Soviet Constitution, Georgia had legal obligation to conduct referendum if it chose to seek separation from Soviet Union. Once Georgia chose the separation under Soviet Constitution, it "forgot" to conduct referendum. Abkhazia had all the rights by law to seek independence, just as South Ossetia had all the rights to object to violent snatching of its territory from former Ossetia. Now, let me guess. Kosovo, that was never anything else other then the Serbian land, where Serbian kingdom was actually founded, became independent following the dismemberment of Serbia. Serbia has all the legal rights over the territory, yet somehow I believe that you would find it "legitimate" as the "good" countries recognized it. Who knows, you may yet surprise me.

It does not matter how big or small a nation is, if its people are full of honour and cannot turn a bling eye to Georgia's land snatching policies, good for them. Also, surely if S. Ossetia and Abkhazia have no right to seek endependence, then surely this means that all territories of the former Soviet Union are have no right to seek independence. My question is simply: why are they being singled out? If they were historically part of Georgia, then how come they did not join the Soviet Union same time as Georgia?

I have never defended Georgia's attack on South Ossetia. I believe it was both wrong and unwise. Nor have I commended on the Soviet-era history of Ossetia. I have commented on contemporary Russia's dismembering of Georgia, and so has the world community at large, by refusing to recognise it.

Hey MARZIPAN ! I am Serbian, and would like to check your honessty. I would like to ask you a simple question by which your honesty would be seen in regard to your position on “dismembering of Georgia by Russia “ as you said it in your last posting. My question to you is “ Have you ever commented from the negative perspective the USA dismemberment of Serbian territory, KOSOVO “. Ever anywhere ??? If yes, then I appreciate your stance in regard to dismembering of sovereign states, otherwise please shut up.

I fully do recognise the independent states of South Ossetia and Abkhazia ever since they was recognised by the Russian Federation and I'am fully pleased the the world's most smallest nation of Nauru has indeed come aboard to recognise these two nations, Legitimately these republics was never Georgian territories the original Georgian territory is these tiny enclaves they are the provinces of Guria,Mtskheta Mtianeti,Racha Lechkhumi,Samegrelo Zemo Svaneti, and Tbilisi these are the only provinces that are originally Georgian the others are from neighbouring countries of Armenia,Azerbaijan,Russia, and Turkey. The other small provinces were stolen by Joseph Stalin. To help build a bigger Georgia by stealing territory from other Caucasus regions. As for the small tiny nation of Nauru I fully praise you all for officially recognising these two tiny nations, I suppose all great thing's always comes in small packages.

Really people, even Peter LaVelle, the American Hater he is would even say that it is somewhat embarrassing for Russia to publically parade these four "powerful" nations as something of a Russian Diplomatic victory. Very sad day for Russian Federation, Putin, Medvedev, and Lavrov! It is laughable, not even George W. Bush could lower himself to this level.

South Ossetia was and will always be a part of Georgia. Did I learn that the tiny attoll of Nauru recognized their independence other than silly leaders as Chavez and Nicaragua's Ortega. That could had been a strange decision by the leader of Nauru. Remember with global warming, Nauru will be erased from the world map. Artyom, who receive medical benefit in the US, FYI: most of them are the undocumented migrants from Mexico and other countries. They cross the US illegally, get pregnant and apply for welfare and cash assistance while most Americans who are gainfully employed do not qualify since they are deemed over income. Staunch numbers of immigrants among them Russians, Armenians, Ukrainians, etc, are recipients of cash assistance for immigrants (CAPI). It is an indication that the world is clever, only three miniscule states other than Russia had acknowledge the independence of South Ossetia. What's in South Ossetia anyway, can Russia deliver their promise?
