UN resolution would have brought no peace to Syria – Medvedev

President Medvedev has clarified the reasons behind Moscow’s veto on the UN resolution on Syria for the prime minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
I have to agree that hasty intervention in a civil war will only lead to more bloodshed. I think all the nations need to sit back down and figure this out before it gets ugly. I know among none of our ploiticians are popular, but I am thankful that McCain did not win, and Gingrich just buried himself as a candidate. We are writing in by the thousands to the White House. I just hope peaceful intervention with a joint effort by all the countries is what comes to pass.
I keep praying for everyone!
@ Bogdanov
Not "from any perspective you look at the problem." Now, what is the problem in Syria? For decades the Syrian government has been a small clan of Alawi Shia sect. 75% of the Syrians are Sunni. How do you think this can be a stable situation in the Arab world? This has been an unstable situation for decades. A government where the vast majority of people have virtually no representation in the rulling clique. So, Russia is not supporting the Syrian people, but a small clan of ruling leaders to support their own interest, their last remaining naval base in the middle east.
.
When Vladimir Putin was President, there was much talk about Him becoming Tsar... and it didn't all come from me :)
On Vladimir Putin's 50th birthday in 2002, He was given a very symbolic gift... an exact copy of Russia's Holy Tsarist Crown.
Then, just when I thought Michael, Russia's Great Prince, was about to stand up and become Tsar... Medvedev came into the picture. You can't imagine how depressed it made me... especially the symbolism of the name, "Medvedev", the exact name of one of the jew-bolshevik guards who murdered God's Tsar, Nicholas II. :(
.rather quickly... Some of their parents need to speak up to some of these clowns we first went to war with. They are just learning Human rights. In the 90s Killing people on TV was cool. Wierdest so called religion I have ever heard of. Pakistanis especially. They follow a copycat religion of Christianity. Mohammed was jelous of Jesus in the Koran. They are evolved Muslims.
Now that the Russian mission to Syria has worked out perfectly and peace has finally arrived in the streets Mr Medvedev has every right to bash the West.
President Medvedev must know that he has contributed centrally to the present crisis in Libya because of his failure to correctly understand what regime change in Libya entailed for regional security. Let us make sure he does not make similar mistakes in Syria. I am uneasy about the fact he had telephone call talk with Sarkozy today.
PR1oh1,
Look at the problem out of the box. Because, you are looking at things which are secondary at this moment and confusing priorities. The key thing now -- the Syrians should have chance to solve their problems themselves. Internally. And this is what Russia and China provided to them by vetoing the external intervention by NATO.
The second part for Syrians will be to decide who gets the power. Or differently, whom Syrians will support -- ruling minority or minority, which is trying to get the power. By the the way, there is no at the moment, never was, and, probably, never will be a country in the world, where majority rules.
Also, you as an American suppose to be a "democrat". Why do you divide Syrians by blood or by the color of skin? Does it matter for you what clan they are originated from? Again, as for "progressive" American. Because, if we choose this path, then we will have a problem right away -- Obama is coming from the country minority. Why then he is "legit" and Assad is not?
Or, say, how do I care that Stalin was a Georgian/Ossetian? Or all Russian Tzars had ether Swedish or German blood? Once they were and wanted to be a part of the Russian culture, and they fought for Russia -- they are all Russians and all equal to me...
So, as I am personally concern, Assad is the biggest Syrian patriot. At least, this is because of him that country is still independent and until recently was doing OK. If so called "opposition" (which in reality are the Western backed insurgents) manages to take Assad out, so, that will be fine with me. But, if Assad will crushes the "opposition" and sinks it in the blood -- so be it. That will be fine with me as well. Simply, because, this is not my country and not my business to snoop in their internal affairs and tell them how to live and what god to believe into...
His army looks to just be firing Missles anywhere it pleases. I heard Syria is nice this time of year.
One way or another Syria will end like Libya.
PR1oh1: You speak like a classic CIA trained neo-colonialist. Hmm, we have a minority here, and 75% there, so let`s set these groups against each other, and then we can go in, pick up the pieces, and take suzerainty over the country. I can assure you that they have this same goal for every country that is not compliant with them. They thoroughly study all of these potential divisions that they can exploit, and how best to incite the groups against each other. They played this game to the hilt in Iraq, with the Kurds, Shiites, Sunnis, marsh Arabs etc. in erasing the common Iraqi identity which existed before the invasion. To think like this is to fall into their trap.
russia should save his onle ally in the middle east. to protect seria from stupid western they need a war like gorgeya war. otherwise usa will make seria there own ally..... and next future the whole world will be the allye of usa except russia. so to protecet russia , russia should play a cold war game against west....
Assad treats his people worse than Americans in Vietnam wrote in#9

I don't even know what I should say to this one here. Have you ever even served in the Vietnam war to say such untruthful, blatant lies? Have you ever even went to Syria? Or anywhere else around the world? You say such things in your comfortable, air-conditioned room, when clearly, you never bother to understand what's around you. The American have been in Vietnam between 1955 to 1975, and they did not, needless to say, have a clean record there, with millions of civilians dead, a country devastated 7scarred for years to come, denying the Vietnamese the right to democratically elect Ho Chi Minh, and instead, install a pro-western dictator rather, allowing the Vietnam War, the 2nd Indochina war, to happen. Ths Syrian thing going has only lasted a year compared, and it was NOT Assad's fault, as the media wants to shovel down to you. This is, yet again, the fault of the west, big business, banks, Zionists, American MIC, & those small .01% who control the rest of the world from behind. This is only just one of several many acts of imperialism the Americans have done to scar the world for the last 100-so years and so forth. The Americans are terrorising the people of Syria the same way they did to many other victims before them, by way of the CIA, sending their crones, like the U.K. & Israel, to do their bidding, funding terrorist groups... oh, I mean, to say, "opposition" parties, putting unfair sanctions on them, all of that, and you to say such lies? Wake up, or you can go, along with your buddy fross, and fight your own, bloody war, see how you like it, but please don't drag the rest of the world with you, because the rest of us like peace, not like you, who just wants war, and living comfortably off the blood of millions of innocent people around the world just to get to say such spite.
To PR1oh1:
Facts: Al-assad's wife Asma is Sunni, his Deputy Farouk al-Sharaa is Sunni.
Opinion: There doesn't seem to be any prejudice and that religion does not play a role with Politics. People are however using religion to divide countries and cultures. Your comments are not helping bring peace to the crisis.
Action: We should all pray for peace. Prayer (no matter what religion you are, even Atheist) is a strong tool in times of crisis. I will start by praying that Russia succeeds in resolving this crisis peacefully. I also prayer that this never repeats in any other country, state, city, town, street or household. Mercy and peace on the souls of all who have perished.
Coming into office Medvedev adopted an approach “…we don’t have to jump sore any time some throw stones on us but smile more often” hoping he will somewhat soften the western harsh rhetoric’s and well-intended Russophobia/hysteria. I agree, it was the right approach to brake the ice and a clever move playing the tandem with Putin. While on the hand Putin, as PM, was always standing firm. With which Russia sent them the massage; we can be nice and kind, but we can also be tough and harsh - which way you want to go?
The American administrations (Reps or Dems) are always choosing for the UN post characters, particularly chosen, such as Susan Rice, thus, clear which way they wanna go… to keep the harsh offensive rhetoric’s and always corner others in the defensive. The bullying game has always been their fame - the idiots even dare do it with their Banker/creditor China.
But time comes when others say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, and we now more often hear that from N Korea, China - who should be given best credits for ´soft diplomacy,´ Iran, Zimbabwe, S Africa, Venezuela, Brazil, Argentina, etc. So which way and how we gonna play US/EU/NATO? The fools manipulating the UN and constantly speaking of “the world is with us” how much of the world’s population is exactly with them? Going this bull-headed way they are soon about to find out… and so will Erdogan trying to play the Arab’s “voice and saviour” taking tough approach to Israel on the Palestine issue but then showing his other face concerning Libya and Syria - just as the top hypocrite Obumba “the world’s messiah and saviour.”
Why do we even care what Russia even thinks? Let's just go in and get it done? What is Russia gonna even do about it? Russia's only allies are North Korea, China, Syria and Iran. Russia looks to be in league with all the wrong crowd and most the world is backing us an speaking out against Russia. Russia matters? What a joke!
America doesn't need to get involved in another war. I didn't even know Russia existed until a few months ago.
Maybe the UN resolution would not have brought peace to Syria. But Russia's blocking of it most certainly hasn't.
I'm loving "Give Russia a break"'s comment and the reaction , I’m thinking people should give him/her a break , you don't understand , that could have been a legitimate comment ha ha, you obviously don't fully understand the "western" education system.
The world stands with the Russian President, prove me wrong .
you know thay do, it's wonderful , and i'm so proud and happy.
you are going to lose everything.
i'm sorry :(
but a lot of peole have been waiting a long time for this.
ths is essentially the high water mark, you need to either blow the world up or yeild.
please try to blow the world up.
the exponential curve has you one this path.
I <3 exponential curve .
Russia is trying to help reaching a peaceful settlement to Syria.
The trouble is that this matter has gone beyond control.
I can only say:right spirit,but too late!
Is is a pity for Russia.

Russia made the right move. From any perspective you look at the problem. And Russia doesn't have to explain anything to anybody. Russia and China gave chance to Syrians to resolve their internal problems among themselves. Without "assistance" of the blood-thirsty Fascist West...
So, Medvedev should speak up more often and more boldly. He is still a Russian leader, for christ sake. I hate the fact, that all latest "Western political diarrhea" and madness is targeting Putin only, while this is Medvedev who is responsible for the Russian foreing policy. Medvedev should do his job and stand firmly for the country and its people. Enough waging the tail and putting Russia in the defending position. In which it, somehow, ends up even when it does the right thing...
