Maksimova - the "Madame No" of Russian ballet

Moscow's Bakhrushin Theatre Museum is hosting a series of evenings entitled “Anthology of Russian Ballet”. During the event, 14 documentaries will be shown at the museum.

One of the first films to be presented was dedicated to the life and work of ballerina Ekaterina Maksimova.

The film called “When Dance Becomes Your Life” is based on a monologue by the ballerina, speaking about her triumphs and hardships. The film's creators, Nikita and Yulia Tikhonovy, say the main purpose was to show her personality:

“We never mention any of the stories that the tabloids usually publish. The main theme of the whole ”Anthology of the Russian Ballet“ is an artist as a personality within a definite time,” director Nikita Tikhonov explains.

Still, it was very difficult making the ballerina talk: Maksimova is sometimes even called “Madam No” because of her dislike of journalists and rare attendance at parties. She is known to be very reluctant to talk about her life off-stage.

This time, however, she did come to the evening to meet her fans and answer their questions.

During the event, some materials found in private archives, which weren't featured in the film, were also shown to the public.
