Illegal caviar seized in Moscow supermarkets

Published 07 August, 2007, 16:36

About three hundred kilogrammes of counterfeit black caviar have been seized from a number of supermarkets in Moscow.

Worth more than 1.5 MLN euros, the Beluga roe had an unusual smell and was contaminated by an intestinal bug.

Police are investigating the origin of the product.

Most black caviar comes from the Caspian Sea, where sturgeons are being hunted to extinction.

Stocks of the fish have dwindled almost forty-fold in the past fifteen years due to overfishing and poaching.
