Emo grows in popularity in Russia

They call themselves Emo kids – it's a new community in Moscow and they are becoming more and more popular in Russia.

Emo stands for “emotional” and naturally these people express their emotions through the music.

The world's number one idols for Emo kids is the band Tokyo Hotel. There are also many other rock bands, including Russian ones.

Maio claim to be the founders of Emo subculture in Russia.

It happened in the year 2003 when young and promising musicians decided to make the Emo, which has a Western origin, more popular in Russia.

“Emo music is more heart-rending and emotional in comparison with other styles. Within one song we can get into a trance or into complete outrage and chaos. And of course the lyrics are very emotional and our songs are about love. What else?” explained Valentin (aka Enstein), vocals.

So, the Emo community is very young in Russia and as every new tendency it is strongly criticized by society and Emos can often be the victims of physical attacks because of their choice of lifestyle.

Critics also being an Emo is just a short-term fad, of no importance.

“I would not say this music is insignificant. Yes, it is for teenagers and those who criticize us are too old to understand us. I agree we touch upon the subjects of love and emotions, which are typical for teenagers, but we are grown up musicians and we consider our music to be very important,” said Dmitry, (aka Matthew), guitar.

Maio are not yet as popular as their American or German rivals but still they do have their own fans and not only in Moscow. They are also invited to perform in many other cities across Russia.

Musicians understand teenagers, better than anyone and it seems to be the best recipe to conquer the young and hot hearts of their fans.
