The Moscow Premiere film festival continues with a documentary dedicated to the life of the late Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich and his widow, opera diva Galina Vishnevskaya. The film, “Elegy of Life”, was made by leading Russian director Aleksandr Sokurov.
There is almost no spoken text in this film, which portrays the iconic couple of Russian classical music.
Aleksandr Sokurov does not go deep into the musical heritage of Rostropovich. It is simply there in the film as an inherent part of his life, spent hand in hand with Vishnevskaya.
The film shows them as citizens of the world for their contribution to international music and culture, as well as being Russian.
“Elegy of Life” was created when Mstislav Rostropovich was still alive and it has turned out to be a fitting tribute to a legend.
