Russia to host 2018 Football World Cup?

Published 29 October, 2007, 17:41

Russia has been given an opportunity to bid for the 2018 Football World Cup following FIFA’s decision to quit its policy of rotating the tournament between continents. This means that rivalry between Russia and England may continue… this time in the corridors of football power instead of on the pitch.

The English Football Association has already expressed its interest in applying for the event with Prime Minister Gordon Brown giving the thumbs up.

Other possible competitors include USA, China and Australia, while African and most likely South American nations will be excluded from the bidding as they will be the hosts for the two preceding tournaments.

South Africa will stage the World Cup in 2010 and Brazil, being the only option, is sure to be approved for 2014 later this week.
