Russian star replaces Venus

Published 29 October, 2007, 17:12

Maria Sharapova has booked a spot in the 2007 Sony Ericsson Championship, ending her season among the world's eight top players for the fourth year running. The world number six made it through to the tournament in Madrid thanks to Venus Williams, who retired from the WTA race.

Sharapova clinched the title in Madrid in 2004 and advanced as far as the semi-finals in 2005 and 2006.

Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova and Anna Chakvetadze have already secured their places in the championship.

Meanwhile, it’s do or die for Russian tennis star Mikhail Youzhny. He's competing in the Paris Masters knowing a good run is essential if he's to qualify for the end of season's Masters Cup in Shanghai.

Six of the top players, including Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko, have already guaranteed their involvement, but the event in the French capital will decide the other two to join them.
