A Japanese musical named “Barefoot Gen” has premiered in Moscow. The musical which reveals the horrors of the Hiroshima bombing has already toured the world to packed houses.
The story is about a boy named Gen who has lost his family in Hiroshima, and how he deals with the aftermath with other survivors.
The story first appeared in a Japanese manga comic book published in 1970s. The plot was mainly based on the experience of its author Keiji Nakazawa, who survived the Hiroshima atom bomb attack.
It was subsequently adapted into three films and a TV series. In 1996 director Kyo Kijima turned the story into a musical.
“The Musical is not a typical Japanese genre. But it would be wrong to stage a play in the Japanese traditional genre because a musical is clear for all people .We wanted to show the production to a lot of people abroad. This musical is about war and children and it's vital for all countries,” actor Masaki Maeda, says.
