World's fastest chess players race against clock

Published 23 November, 2007, 16:16

The World Blitz Chess Championship has come to an end in Moscow – with a Ukrainian grandmaster taking the title. This is speed chess played against the clock, with less then ten minutes allowed per game – plenty of time to make mistakes.

World number two Vassily Ivanchuk led on the first day and was again in control on the second.

He overcame 19 of the world's greatest players to triumph and win a hefty chunk of the $US 100,000 prize fund.

Eventually he beat world champion Viswanathan Anand, who made two crucial mistakes that cost him the match – and the title.
