Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Published 25 December, 2007, 05:39

Christians around the world are celebrating one of the most important days in the church calendar. In Moscow, services have been held in the capital's non-Orthodox churches. But most Russians are waiting for January 7, when the country traditionally commemorates the birth of Christ.

Orthodox Christians follow the Julian calendar, so the majority of Russians won't celebrate Christmas until after the new year – January 7.

On Christmas Eve, Catholics congretated for Midnight Mass at one of Russia’s largest Cathedrals, Moscow’s Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
