Tiger pops out for a "hot dog"

Published 23 January, 2008, 14:22

A young tigress is being cared for near Vladivostok in Russia's Far East after it devoured a dog and stole its kennel.

Exhausted after her meal, the Amur tigress had to be taken to the vet's for injections. As soon as the animal recovers it will almost certainly be taken to one of Russia's zoos.

Despite being nameless, the six-month-old Amur is already notorious across Russia's Far East.

She spent about a week in the kennel after eating the dog, suffering from frostbite, exhaustion and fever.

Once the cub was found and sedated, vets gave her a few injections to boost her immunity and prevent inflammations

As soon as the tigress is back to normal she will be allowed into an open-air cage, but never back into the wild.

Experts say lone cubs are usually found because their mothers have fallen victim to a poacher's bullet. In normal circumstances, a female tiger would keep an eye on its cubs for the first two years of their lives.
