A major battle is on the cards in ice-hockey, with newly-crowned European champions Metallurg Magnitogorsk set to play NHL side New York Rangers.

The two teams will battle it out for the inaugural Victoria Cup, which will be awarded each year to the winner of a game between Europe’s top team and an NHL challenger.

This year's match will take place in Bern, Switzerland on October 1, with the Rangers then traveling to Prague to play the Tampa Bay Lightning in the opening game of the NHL season.

In another game, Ottawa Senators will play Pittsburgh Penguins in Stockholm, Sweden.
