Orthodox believers fast in run-up to Easter

Orthodox Christians have started Great and Holy Week in the build-up to Easter. It’s the most solemn time in the Church year, commemorating the last days of Jesus’ life before his crucifixion and resurrection.
Many believers in Russia observe a strict fast during Great and Holy week. Meat and dairy products are forbidden. On most days, no alcohol is allowed and no oil is used in cooking.
During these seven days, Orthodox Christians focus on prayer and church services.
Each Great Day has its own distinct character and specific ceremony. But they all bring Christians closer to the main spiritual event of the church year, Easter celebrations.
