Russian avant-garde rooted in Pre-Raphaelites?

Published 14 May, 2008, 10:48

What do British Pre-Raphaelites and Russian avant-gardists of the early 20th century have in common? Strange as it may seem, quite a lot – from composition to the palette. Christie’s auction house has brought selected works by Pre-Raphaelite brothers to Moscow, which are now on display for the first time at the Tretyakov gallery.

The Victorian era painters are placed next to Russians Natalia Goncharova, Mikhail Larionov, Natan Altman and others.

Thus the organisers hope to revitalise the principles laid by the founder of the gallery, Pavel Tretyakov, and his brother Sergey, who willed his collection of Western European art to be united with the Russian one belonging to Pavel.
