Quarter of Russian pupils fail literature test

Many of this year's school pupils are failing to keep up with Russia's glorious literary past. Preliminary results from the Unified State Exams revealed a quarter of those who took the test in literature failed.
Only 9.4 % managed to pass the exam with the highest possible score.
The tests were taken over several days throughout Russia.
Officials say the results in maths, which are yet to be released, could be just as poor.
The best results came in French, English and social studies.
In Unified State Exams each pupil must take exams in maths and Russian language. In addition, they must take at least two other subjects of their choice. This year general knowledge was the most popular subject chosen by students.
