Prostitutes lure Johns with free fuel

Published 26 June, 2008, 17:34

Brothel workers in Nevada are struggling to make ends meet, and it’s mainly because of rocketing fuel prices. The truckers who keep them in business are staying away. They say high diesel prices have left them with no extra money for adult entertainment. However, the sex industry is not giving up just yet.

It’s said to be the worst economic crisis in prostitution in almost 50 years. According to a lobbyist for the Nevada Brothel Owners' Association, many members have seen their revenue drop by between 20 and 45 per cent.

The state has 28 brothels, mainly serving the long-haul truck drivers on the inter-states. But the drivers are paying 60 per cent more than last year to fill up their tanks.

Because of licensing rules, many brothels are several hours outside metropolitan areas and cash-strapped drivers can no longer afford to drive long distances to pay for sex.

As a result, many girls have been fired and brothel owners are taking extra measures to attract customers. Some are offering free showers, coffee or overnight parking to drivers willing to have a good time in a saloon. Others are even promising discounted petrol for regular customers.

For instance, one of the houses of ill repute is advertising its July’s special online:  “Spend $US 300 for one hour for services and receive a $US 50 gas card”.
