Most titled Russian coach to resign at end of season

Published 10 July, 2008, 13:14

CSKA Moscow's President, Evgeny Giner, said on Wednesday that coach Valery Gazzaev would resign at the end of the 2008 season. While Gazzaev has been in charge, the Red Army men won three Championships in Russia and grabbed the UEFA Cup in 2005.

Valery Gazzaev is the only Russian coach in recent times to have won at least one European contest as welll as winning Russian Championships with two different teams as a coach. Besides, Gazzaev participated in all 17 Russian championships, which is also an exceptional achievement.

It will be Gazzaev's second retirement from the post in the last five years. He first left the club in 2003 when CSKA, despite winning the national championships, failed to qualify for the Champions League.

The former Russian Champions CSKA are currently ninth in the table, following Sunday's defeat by city rivals Dinamo.
