Silver Russian-style Infiniti for an heir

Published 15 September, 2008, 10:02

A businessman from Kazan has presented a silver-plated Infiniti to his wife after he learnt she was expecting their fourth baby. The car is covered with numerous metal plates coated with silver ornament. The cost of the decoration – around $US 80,000 – cannot be compared, though, to that of a gold-plated Porshe, which appeared on Moscow streets in July. Its owner then spent at least five times more on the adornment.

The wife was quite happy with the “moderate” present, though – anyway, in Kazan the car will have no rivals.

The plates for both automobiles were made using aerography – a special technique of stenciling images on a range of surfaces.

Over the recent years, it has gained popularity in Russia. Though drawings can be made on any objects, Russians prefer to use it for adorning their cars. This is, of course, a way to stand out in the crowd and demonstrate their individual style but some drivers argue that drawings on fenders and the bonnet can even protect the vehicle from theft. Indeed, a thief would think before stealing a car decorated with a colourful Garfield or a dolphin.

Aerography is another wave in car fashion. In the 1990s, it was prestigious to own a cherry-coloured Zhiguli, which was difficult to find if you didn’t have the proper contacts. In the 2000s black BMW’s were seen as the sign of distinction. Now that an assortment of expensive vehicles surprises nobody, the time has come for creative ideas.

Their fulfillment is only limited by the amount of money a car owner is ready to spend. In Moscow, the decoration of one fender, for instance, ranges from $600 to $1,300.

The first Russian aerography festivals took place in Moscow and St. Petersburg in 2007. Dozens of studios featured their works in the categories such as “Animals”, “Fantasy”, “Cinema and cartoons”, “History and culture”, “Advertising aerography”, “Details”, and “Ornament”. The latter is considered among professionals the most complicated technique.
