Moscow through the eyes of foreigners

Published 17 August, 2009, 18:02

Four expat women living in Moscow have come up with a novel idea to investigate the way foreigners perceive their lives here.

“How Do You Do… Moscow?” is a photographic and journalistic research of Moscow city life as seen through the eyes of a foreigner.

Several people selected to participate in the project, of random social, professional and geographical statuses, were photographed in different areas of Moscow, so that the images reflected who they are and what they do. They were also briefly interviewed about their thoughts and feelings about the city.

The display, organized in a documentary way, will show some of the interview extracts placed near the photographs to give a clearer image of the personality of the subject.

“How Do You Do… Moscow?” will also feature other projects, in cardboard sculpture for example. Andrey Terekhov designed the “Happy Tree” cardboard sculpture, the leaves of which are pictures of Moscow made by students from the English International School. Another sculpture, created by Chris Rüedi – an ironic illustration of the nuts and bolts of Moscow traffic titled "What Traffic?" – will be installed in the exhibition space.

A DJ from one of Moscow’s popular nightclubs will present a compilation CD “If Moscow Was a Song”.

Interaction with visitors will be one of the colorful project’s peculiarities. The exhibition guests are welcome to join in the “How Do You Do… Moscow?” buzz, and write something about life in Moscow on a special wall.

The project also aims to attract the attention of the foreign community to the problems of charity in Russia, and to help the country’s two leading charities – “Big Brothers, Big Sisters” and “Nastenka” – financially. Posters of some of the photographs and other works of art will be offered for sale at the exhibition in order to raise money for the charitable funds.

The exhibition opens in the Moscow Museum of Modern Art (Zurab Gallery) on August 21, and will last through to September 20.
