No Alonya, monarchy is not "outdated" at all! At least not the constitutional monarchies found in many of the high-ranking democratic nations on the UN's Human Development Index: Australia/Canada/NZ/ UK, Denmark, Holland, Japan, Norway, Sweden. In Canada, our Monarchy (Queen of Canada is Elizabeth II) has a close, historical relationship with our people - and especially our Indigenous Peoples, for whom the Royal Proclamation of 1763 is the foundation of so many rights that are now being negotiated. 
In Canada, the recent "Will & Kate" tour was immensely popular in every corner, with some dissidents protesting peacefully in Québec. Fair enough - the Duke and Duchess did a great job of promoting Canadian design, fashion, manufacture, as well as bringing some comfort to distressed areas like the recently-burned-out Slave Lake Alberta, and to children with special needs. 
Now in California, Will & Kate tour is something different of course, and they will be helping advance British industry as well as promoting charity events. 
Eve n without Will & Kate to idolize, American media would hardly substitute the serious issues such as unemployment, environment or international relations, but we would just see more of the disfunctional public antics of Lindsay Lohan, Mel Gibson and other "entertainment" personalities. Give me Will and Kate anytime over those wastrels!!
