I think it was Gore Vidal who summed up Capitalism aptly as a welfare state for the wealthy and the pain of market discipline for the rest of us.
In a country like India the myth prevails that free market has freed us from the inertia of Socialism. Nothing could be far from truth. In reality the country wallows in massive corruption where 80% of the population are living in marginalized poverty.

I have just watched your Cross Talk programme today when one of the people taking part refered to Africa as a country and the people there been poor. This is the problem with people in europe, north and south america. A lot of them don't know how many countries make up Africa. My own country, Nigeria, is bigger than britain, france and germany put together. When europeans go to the continent of Africa to dig for diamond, gold copper, uranium, iron ore not to talk of crude oil and other mineral resourses, then people of Africa are not so poor. The problem is that the prices of these resourses are determined by europeans and noth americans so that the producing countries can not get the right prices for their products. Another problem is that a greater percentage of US citizens don't know where diferent countries are in the world not to talk about countries in Africa.
