Is NATO’s backing of Ankara another step towards regime change in Syria? Did the Turkish jet stray into Syria’s air space unintentionally? Or was it an attempt to provoke Assad? And how will the international community react to further escalation of the ongoing civil war? CrossTalking with Patrick Hayes, Ryan Mauro and Joseph Kechichian on June 27.

The 6/30-7/1 issue in the Wall Street Journal, reports that US intelligence doubts Turkey's version of events. Unamed sources report that the Turkish version of the F-4 Phantom is designed with surveillance equipment and used on spying missions. The Turks claim that their jet was shot down, without warning-outside of Syrian airspace. Syria claims that the jet was downed in Syrian airspace with anti-aircraft fire, that has a limited range of 1.5miles. The US intelligence has little interest in disputing their NATO ally Turkey. Turkey may be testing Syrian air defense capabilities. The act of flying low is typical of aircraft seeking to fly under enemy radars. It is clear that any attempt at a 'no fly zone' will come at a heavy cost. It is also clear that any Israeli bombers, flying low over Syria, on their way to Iran will be detected and likely shot down by more advanced Russian missiles. The reality of Syria, and Russia for that matter make it extremely difficult for a mass of bombers to go undetected by numerous and redundant air defenses. Should Russia decide to improve their port facilities-then the import of their most modern air defense systems would give NATO and Israel pause-before embarking on a suicide mission to the mountains of Iran.

justnfree (unregistered) wrote in #8 Syria didn't do anything wrong, on the other hand Turkey trains, arms and send large number of terrorist and mercenaries to Syria. It's really funny some people still call those murders peaceful protesters while we saw the crimes and massacres they commited is far beyond than what Syrian government did, and we are still in the middle of just wait to see how much we realize few years from now about what they did and who supported them.Syria shot down the very old F4 with short range anti air craft artillery. It's definitely not a show of power for Syrian anti air craft capability and for sure they couldn't have shoot the air craft if it wasn't in Syrian air space. What does Turkey has to threat against Syria? They are already sending large number of terrorists into Syria. It's really amazing that two of the guest are still trying to sell us the old and exposed lie that the regime is killing its people. Don't they realize it's almost a year people stopped believing that? You mean that terrorists killed those 1000s not Assad? His father was also like that. He was weak that he couldn't stop terrorists to kill 30000 people in Homs long years ago. I feel pity for father Assad and young Assad that, even Syria is not an easily accessible country, their people are always got killed by terrorists.  There are 34.000 refugees in Turkey and they are in protected camps. You either dream a lot or watch some vogue sources about the truth.  One last point, if you don't want Syrians to defend themselves from Assad's massacres, you are probably one of his men.
