The NBA has banned its players from using Twitter and other social media sites during games.
The league sent a memo to the teams telling them that all cell phones and other communication devices must be turned off 45 minutes before the start of a game and cannot be used during halftime break and may only turn them on once the players have finished their responsibilities after a match, AP news agency reports.
The new rule applies to “coaches, players and other team basketball operations personnel,” Frank Tim, NBA spokesman, said.
The league didn’t explain the reasons behind the move.
The memo did not specify penalties for violating the new rule and said teams are free to create their own policies for practices and other team events.
So far the league has had just one Twitter-related scandal, when Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban was fined $25,000 after complaining about a referee’s decision via the social network last March.
The NBA has more than 1.4 million followers on Twitter, and many players themselves are active on it.
