Russia’s interim WBA champion Denis Lebedev could face WBA cruiserweight champion Guillermo Jones in Moscow in October. Lebedev’s promoter Vladimir Kryunov has made a corresponding offer to Jones' promoter Don King.
“Today I reserved the CSKA basketball arena to hold the fight on a day in the second week of October,”Khryunov told the R-Sport news agency on Friday.
“I’ve had talks with sponsors and today I’m going to send an offer to Don King to hold the match in Moscow in October,” he said.
If Khryunov and King don’t strike a deal by June 29, Khryunov says he is prepared to submit a purse bid in a mandatory WBA auction to determine Jones’ challenger.
This would be the first title defense for the 40 year old Panamanian, who holds a record of 38 wins, three losses and two draws, since he beat American Michael Marrone in six rounds last November.
For Lebedev this will be the second attempt to grab a full title. He lost to German fighter Marco Huck in a bout for the WBO belt in 2010 – the only defeat in the Russian southpaw’s otherwise spotless 25-1 record.
