Russia’s captain Andrey Arshavin says he hasn’t seen Slovenia in action so far, but the Arsenal star doesn’t expect an easy life for his team in the upcoming World Cup playoffs.

“According to our current status, the chances of Russia seem preferable. Another thing is that it is not status that goes out on the pitch. I have to confess, I have not seen a single Slovenian match so far,” Andrey Arshavin told Bobsoccer.ru.

Russia and Slovenia – both second placed in their qualifying groups – clash in a two-leg playoff for the World Cup spot, with Game One scheduled for November 14, and Game Two for November 18.

“If we score three goals, and won’t concede any, then the probability of our qualification for the World Cup will nearly be guaranteed. However, for the sake of objectivity, it is unlikely to happen,” the 28-year-old said.

The first game is to be played at Luzhniki stadium in Moscow, and Arshavin believes it is a perfect venue for the match.

“First of all, more people will come to the Luzhniki stadium [which has the capacity of over 80,000]. The second is that the squad is in a familiar environment. And third – the artificial pitch, which may give us an advantage,” he said.

The captain said both he and his partners treat Slovenia seriously and opinions that Russia may lack motivation in the game are pointless.

“Let them speak. They have to speak about something after all. In my personal opinion: such statements only speak about the lack of brains. We are talking about the Word Cup qualification here. Is there still a need to explain anything?” he said.

He also revealed that it is not only Guus Hiddink, but also Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, who wants him to be victorious against Slovenia.

“Arsene Wenger said: Do your job and return to the club as a World Cup participant,” he said.

Arshavin made his debut for the Russian team in 2002. Since then he has played 48 games for the team and scored 16 goals.
